The Location

The Flower Strip stretches for twenty miles between Leiden and Haarlem and is home to the Dutch Tulip fields. The Flower Strip, also called the Bollenstreek, spreads across the provinces of North Holland just southwest and west of Amsterdam.

The Best Time to Visit

The earliest flowers usually bloom in the month of January. The flower show will last until the end of May when the lilies start to depart. Tour experts say that the beast time to visit the Flower Strip is from mid March to mid May and this time is considered the core season. If you wish to see tulips, the best time will be mid April. It is the time the Tulip Festival take over Amsterdam and the famous flower parade starts.

Keukenhof Gardens

Keukenhof Gardens is one of the biggest and most popular attractions in Holland. It is the largest flower garden of the world and has numerous varieties of tulips. If you visit in late March, you can have a spectacular floral display of more than seven million bulbs in bloom that extends over eight acres.

If you are a real flower buff, then you should not miss the flower auctions that take place in Aalsmeer. This will give you a true idea of the industrial scale of the Flower Strip.

You can get to the Flower Strip by public transport. There are regular buses that run from Schiphol and Amsterdam to the region or you may take train to Haarlem or Leiden and cycle from there.
