Self-Portrait as a Painter

This portrait was created during the period from December 1887 to February 1888. In this self-portrait, Van Gogh presented himself as a painter. He appears holding a palette and paintbrushes behind his easel in this painting. In this portrait he used a new painting style including bright and almost unblended colors to show that he was a modern artist. The palette depicted in this picture contains the complementary color pairs red/green, yellow/purple and blue/orange. These are the precise colors which are used by van Gogh for this painting. This was the last work Van Gogh produced in Paris.

Self-Portrait with Straw Hat

This painting was completed in the year 1887. In this portrait van Gogh appears in light summer clothes. This picture is drawn in a way that the artist is examining us with one blue and one green eye.

Van Gogh used cardboard instead of a canvas for this self-portrait. He then used a layer of priming along with dashes of purple. But, unfortunately the pigment in that purple paint has largely faded over the years. As a result of this, the original composition colors that are created by Van Gogh have been lost over time.

Self-Portrait with Pipe and Straw Hat

This portrait was also produced in 1887. This portrait is a great example of the progress that van Gogh made as a painter in Paris. The summery palette and loose brushwork betray the influence of the Impressionists. In this painting van Gogh appears with a straw hat and a pipe. He used different tones of colors to highlight his face and beard.

During this period Van Gogh was practicing painting portraits. As the models for painting such portraits were expensive, he used himself as his subject with the help of a mirror.
