Recently, the researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam surveyed 12,000 people from 10 countries to gauge the outreach of the world’s 18 best museums. Where the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum represented Amsterdam city in the survey, the British Museum represented London and the Louvre stood for Paris.
The Louvre museum in Paris topped the published list as the museum having the best reputation worldwide. Considering respondents from Europe only, the Van Gogh museum topped the list being the museum with the most reputation. Although the study said that Louvre and Rijksmuseum closely follow Van Gogh museum in popularity among the Europeans, the overall numbers keep Louvre in a higher position.
The respondents commented on “the collections, layout, and reputation,” in the survey. They gave feedbacks on several factors on the 18 museums including products and services, capacity, contributions to the public, and the conservation of heritages. The familiarity of the public regarding the world’s best museums also influenced the rankings.
The city where the museums reside also influenced the rankings – Amsterdam, for instance, is highly regarded by tourists. The city influenced the scoring patterns of European respondents in particular.
Prof. Cees Van Riel, chair in corporate communication at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, said “The position of the relatively young Van Gogh Museum is strikingly high compared to the traditional giants,” like Louvre, Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Apparently, do not confuse Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg with the Hermitage Amsterdam, its Netherlands branch.
The Van Gogh museum is eponymous and focuses on the works of a single artist and his lifelong achievements – this adds a feather in his cap. “Our task is to make the life and work of Vincent van Gogh accessible to as many people as possible around the world. It’s naturally fantastic for us to hear that this is so highly appreciated,” said Axel Rüger Director of the Van Gogh museum while commenting on the survey’s outcome.
Go to a Van Gogh museum tour, and see what constitutes the ‘outreach’ a term that the survey termed as ‘reputation’. When you tour Amsterdam, also make Rijksmuseum and Hermitage Amsterdam a part of your itinerary, which you can visit after you have finished the Van Gogh museum tour.
